My Square
A new, mass participation project from Folkestone Fringe in response to the coronavirus pandemic, made possible by Arts Council England.
‘MySquare’ is a project from Folkestone Fringe that invites you to use the website/app ‘What3Words’ to pick a location of significance to you, and represent the words that are assigned to that location in a creative way.
‘What3Words’ divides the earth into 3metre squares and assigns each square 3 unique words which are easy to say and share, and are as accurate as GPS coordinates.
By sharing your outcome, it will be added to an online map that includes the work of everyone involved - and so creates a virtual creative tour! The more the project is shared, the bigger the map becomes. It might change from your local area, to the whole world!
So get involved and get sharing! Here’s how:
Pick a square/words:
Using the What3Words app or the website, pick a square of significance to you. It could be where you are right now or your favourite place, have a look around the map and find words that you like.
Decide how to represent your words:
Do whatever you feel comfortable with, but if you feel like a challenge, why not try something new or have a look at our list of outputs or guidebooks for some inspiration!
Get creative:
Create your work. It could be anything and might take 2 minutes or 2 days. Have a look at our examples to help you get going. Why not invite a family member to join in too and see if you can help eachother!
Share it:
Send it over to Folkestone Fringe using the downloadable form which you can find by clicking the 'submit your square' tile. You can see what others have been up to by viewing the online map.
We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Examples of outputs:
Drawing – One line, one hand, your wrong hand, upside down, tiny, massive! You could use pens, pencils, chalk, ink or anything that leaves a mark. Draw on paper, cardboard, a window or the walls! (With permission).
Painting – Try using different paints, materials and styles
Printmaking – Monoprints, potato stamps, woodcut or lino. Why not make use of the sun and have a look at a cyanotype kit!
Collages and papercuts are easy and fun. Pick up an old newspaper or magazine and see what you can find.
Written Poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction - There are no limits here! You could write some lyrics or a fantasy story.
3-dimensional sculptures and models can be made out of anything! Cardboard, clay, mud, ice, wax, plaster, concrete, paper and more.
Make a film! You could record a short story or dramatic adverts using your words as a script
Use food - Make a meal shaped like your words.
Use light - To create shadows and silhouettes.
Performance - This can vary from anything to a dance to a piece of performance art.
Get creative with photography, this can be how you capture an outcome above or an outcome in itself.
Record a song or create some sound art!
Use textiles – knit or sew, you could make 3 badges and add them to a bag or t-shirt.
These options are just to provide some inspiration, you’re welcome to be as creative as you like and to try lots of different things to see what you enjoy most.
