11:00-16:00 | CRAIG GELL - STARLING BROADCAST
2-SUN & 3 FEB
SIGNAL BOX, FOLKESTONE HARBOUR
Starling Broadcast is a composition and sound installation by Folkestone-based composer and musician Craig Gell.
The piece weaves field recordings, of a starling roost beneath the Inner Harbour’s 1930s swing bridge, with ethereal instrumental music; exploring the rich, textural birdsong through musique concréte and eco-acoustic compositional techniques.
The audio was captured in late November 2018 over three subsequent dusk evenings, when the birds gather together for warmth and to exchange information - heard through a range of vocalisations.
In common with Gell’s previous composition El Dorado, the work serves as a unique record of a habitat, in place and time; in an era when society at large has become more aware of their environment and the effects of climate change.
Presented in a defunct railway signal box, yards from where the audio was captured, the piece is enhanced by the limited space providing the listener with an intense and immersive experience.
