UNFOLDING WORLDS is a Screen South XR Lab + Showcase project, creating new work for public exhibition as part of Folkestone Fringe, 16-19 October 2025.
Can the interactive and fabricated landscapes of video game creative tech be retooled as a poetic and critical medium for portraying as yet unimagined futures?
Unfolding Worlds showcases new work by five artists as the culmination of a Lab led by Screen South with Tinkr Academy and presented in partnership with Folkestone Fringe, exploring the potential of UNREAL engine - an innovative 3D modelling software - as a tool for poetic and critical reflection. Taking inspiration from john gerrard's landmark Triennial 2025 commission Ghost Feed, which was constructed utilising UNREAL engine, a cohort of cross-disciplinary creatives from across the South East were challenged to master new software skills and develop work for exhibition in just three months. The resultant works, whether presented complete or as works in progress, represent a rich diversity of approaches emerging from the creative disciplines and backgrounds of the group.

Screen South's quarterly Lab series aims to nurture the digital skills of regional creatives. Once selected, participants take part in a series of workshops and receive studio access, technical guidance and mentoring for their development period. The programme, which is free to access, is supported by Arts Council England, with funding from UK Government. With thanks to Folkestone Triennial 2025.
