On Friday, September 6th, 2024, Folkestone will host a unique exhibition by Croatian artist >> Željko Beljan<< as part of his residency within the Magic Carpets platform, organised by Folkestone Fringe and >> Lab852<<. Beljan, currently on a three-week artistic residency in Folkestone, has crafted a vibrant series of wooden games titled The Most Beautiful Game and Other Stories, inviting visitors to explore the intersection of play, craft, and art.
Beljan's work delves into traditional handicraft techniques, a practice deeply rooted in his family history and personal upbringing. His artistic journey has seen him blend these traditional methods with contemporary art practices, focusing on the delicate balance between functional objects and artistic expression. Through improvisation and exploration, Beljan creates works that are as much about the process as they are about the finished product.
The exhibition will feature a collection of colorful, hand-crafted wooden games, inspired by the vibrant hues of Folkestone's Creative Quarter. These games are designed to encourage participation and interaction, drawing inspiration from Johan Huizinga's concept of Homo ludens (the playful man). Beljan’s games highlight the fundamental human connection to play, while also promoting social interaction and meaningful engagement. Each game is a testament to his ongoing exploration of the relationship between handiwork and amateur, hobbyist engagement in sports and games.
Beljan’s approach is hands-on and process-oriented, often utilizing found materials such as discarded wooden boards or remnants from bulky waste. These materials are transformed into beautifully crafted and painted games, each with its own unique set of rules and strategies, tailored specifically for this event.
Don’t miss the opportunity to experience The Most Beautiful Game and Other Stories first-hand and engage in a dialogue with the artist’s ongoing exploration of craft, art, and play. The event is part of the larger Skate, Cycle, Teenage Market and Music Day in Folkestone, promising a day full of creativity, community, and participation.
