British soldiers’ presence on the streets of Belfast was often only too evident: armoured vehicles, SLRs, checkpoints, surveillance cameras … and lookout posts.

Most were like ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ or Colditz POW camps. In a middle-class avenue, though there was one which looked more like a pretty cuckoo clock.
That anomaly reflected so many of the contradictions of the ‘Troubles’ and the use of dark humour as a coping mechanism.
It was a bit bizarre to see camouflage uniforms in an urban city. On a bus, I overheard this:

“Would you look at those soldiers”! “What soldiers”?
