In the UK, salt-making stretches back to prehistoric times when the process involved clay furnaces and pans. This panhouse process was most likely a British development and may have been the first coal-fuelled industry anywhere in Western Europe. For SALT Festival, Haeckels of Margate will bring back salt making to Folkestone by harvesting seawater straight from the beach, dehydrating it in pans to create enough salt to perform their own unique body scrub treatment. Following the festival, the specially designed apparatus will take up residence and provide Haeckels with salt for continuing treatments at the harbour as well as a unique ingredient to local restaurants.
