There’s more to an artwork than its finished state, but exhibitions concentrate on that, along perhaps with preparatory studies which act as preliminary versions of that state. Yet there may be any number of by-products from the making of an artwork, and that is what Collateral Drawing explores by showing the ‘collateral’ alongside the finished work.
The curatorial project by BEASTON Projects was launched in 2014 at Plymouth College of Art and has since shown further editions in Athens, Berlin and East Anglia. This has prompted the need to create a Collateral Drawing archive. For the first time this will be revealed in Kent at The Margate Washhouse and The Brewery Tap UCA Project Space, in conjunction to Collateral Drawing 5 at Strange Cargo Gallery during the Folkestone Triennial 2017.
